History

The Santa Helena Nursing Home was founded on October 10th in 1915, by José Procópio Teixeira and Edgar Quinet de Andrade Santos, under the name of Asilo de Mendigos de Juiz de Fora (Nursing Home of Juiz de Fora). Today it is a civil and philanthropic institution that aims to shelter inpatients, needy elderly people, regardless of race, color, sex or religion, only if they submit to its internal rules. It is considered a local, state and federal public utility.

Accommodation

The Nursing Home has 145 residents, with 75 men and 70 women housed in renovated housing that were refurnished in 2008 according to ANVISA standards – (National Agency of Public Health,) with a recreation room with stereos and TV. There are four beds in each room. The oldest building contains the office of management, reception, the accounting and personnel sectors, the chapel, the adult diapers factory, the laundry room, interdisciplinary care rooms, and the physical therapy center. In the nursing home staff there are doctors, psychologists, social workers, speech therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, physical education teachers, nursing assistants and caregivers of the elderly that provide ongoing assistance to residents. Dependent inmates receive intense and constant treatment.

Memorial

There is also a space designated for the Rotary Club of Juiz de Fora, which was the fifth service club started in Brazil, founded on 09.11.1927. There is a memorial in this space in honor of this Rotary Club. The Rotary Club was of immense help to the Nursing Home. One example of help provided by the Rotary Club includes the construction of the building located on the second floor where elderly women are sheltered. The Rotary Club Memorial is permanently open to the public.

Recreation

Recently built, the recreational building “Dr.Maurício Miranda Teixeira,” is where the fraternization festivities of the inmates are held. Some of these festivities include the “Junina Party,” Carnival, Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthdays and also parties for the community, like lunch and dinner parties, aimed at raising funds for the institution.

Our team

Adaptation

The most important step for the successful development of the integration of the elderly in the Santa Helena Nursing Home is adaptation. The resident is encouraged by professionals to maintain independence, to have healthy interactions with their neighbors, and to participate in monitored activities developed especially for them. Counseling will help the new resident to understand his or her new environment.

Social Worker

A social worker greets the resident on the day of admission, has the responsibilities of making a socioeconomic analysis, monitoring the rights of the elderly, overlooking documentation and benefits, and assisting with their adaptation phase. The social worker helps to solve personal problems, makes contact with family members, and encourages the participation of new residents in the programs and events. The social worker also helps in hospital admissions and medical appointments when they are carried out externally. The social worker is also present in programs in general, be they internal or external.

Psychologist

Along with the other members of the technical team, the psychologist promotes the biopsychosocial well-being to the elderly patients. The psychologist contributes to the best adaptation of the elderly to their new life. To help the elderly in their adaptation, the psychologist takes into account the preferences and expectations of the new resident, their fears and emotional reactions, as well as the influences of the family circle.

Speech Therapy

The professional audiologist works in the areas related to human communication (voice, hearing, speech and language) and in the areas related to alimentation (coordinating breathing, chewing and swallowing). Working in conjunction with the gerontology department, the speech therapist works as part of an interdisciplinary team seeking individual and environmental therapeutic actions providing quality aging.
